Monitoring of Nitrate Leaching in Sandy Soils: Comparison of Three Methods

Research by Lincoln Zotarelli, Johannes M. Scholberg, Michael D. Dukes, and Rafael Muñoz-Carpena, University of Florida in the Journal of Environmental Quality.
Summary by Acclima.

This study evaluated different methods to measure nitrate leaching in mulched, drip-irrigated zucchini, pepper, and tomato production systems. Proper N fertilizer and irrigation management can reduce nitrate leaching while maintaining crop yield, which is critical to enhance the sustainability of vegetable production on soils with poor water and nutrient-holding capacities. The Acclima SCX was used in conjunction with a timer to evaluate moisture-based irrigation for the vegetables above.
